One brand, three countries: marketing across Canada, the US and the Dominican Republic

At Cool Digital Marketing we work with businesses and professionals in Canada, the United States and the Dominican Republic. Three countries, three calendars, several languages and very different ways of talking to customers. Here is our perspective on what changes from one market to another, and what should never change.

What changes

Language and tone. Spanish in Toronto is not the same as Spanish in Santo Domingo or Miami. Words, expressions and even the level of formality shift. A message that sounds warm in one place can sound too casual, or too stiff, in another. In Canada, the same brand may also need to speak English and French.

The calendar. Holidays, school years and shopping seasons are different. A promotion planned around Canadian Thanksgiving in October means nothing to an audience that celebrates it in November, and a campaign for Dominican Mother’s Day has its own date.

Where conversations happen. Each audience has its favourite channels. Some respond better to email, others to social media or direct messages. A strategy built for one market rarely works unchanged in another.

Expectations and rules. Privacy and consent rules are not the same everywhere. In Canada, for example, commercial emails must follow the anti-spam law. What is common practice in one country may need adjusting in another.

What should not change

Who you are. Your values, your promise and the way you treat people are the same in every country. Customers notice when a brand feels like a different company depending on where you meet it.

How you look. Logo, colours, typography and visual style should be recognizable everywhere. Adapting a message is not the same as reinventing the brand.

The quality of the experience. A clear answer, a respected deadline and a well-made piece of content build trust in any language.

Adapt the message, protect the brand

The balance we look for is simple to say and takes work to do: adapt what you say and when you say it, but protect who you are. A strong brand can travel. It just needs to speak the local language, in every sense of the word.

If your business serves more than one market and you want to review how your brand travels, let’s talk.
